Renovate obsolete buildings.
Although we are seeing better construction and increasingly stringent requirements compared to the past, incremental improvement has not led to an integrated analysis and reorganisation of the buildings sector. There is still a lack of sophistication in the production chain logic.
To ensure the articulation and acceleration of transformation in the construction sector, experts point to technology, especially artificial intelligence, as a key factor. By 2030, there should be growing concerns about assembling and developing solutions that minimise workforce dependency, as well as the use of 3D printing, customisation of solutions, robotics, and integration of digitisation systems.
Future-proof buildings will have to be resilient, efficient, sustainable, healthy and flexible. And, according to experts, these requirements have the same starting point, regardless of the building typology: designing good structural solutions working on bioclimatic and passive aspects.
It is necessary to plan, overcoming obstacles and taking advantage of opportunities, always with an integrated and multidisciplinary approach with the technical control systems.
The lack of thermal comfort in most buildings, whether housing or services, is just one of the reasons why future buildings should be different. Together with national legislation, which is based on European standards, as a driving force for change. Already at the beginning of 2021, new buildings will be obliged to guarantee the energy sustainability of buildings with energy from renewable sources, giving preference to local production.
Climate change, with its impact on temperatures and the availability of resources, combined with the need for comfort – thermal, water, indoor air quality, technological – will put increasing pressure on buildings. The European standards and goals are clear: decarbonisation is essential and the focus is on reducing energy needs, improving the energy efficiency of the systems. in addition to the well-known strategies of investment in decentralised production using renewable energy sources, electrification of consumption and digitalisation.
In this sense, it is important to strike a balance between the passive and the active, giving priority to bioclimatic solutions and the passive component. From there, the priority is to invest in efficient and sustainable equipment to meet needs and in regular and efficient control with a high degree of automation.
To reach 2030 and show results in line with the legislation and, above all, with the real needs of the country, we will have to overcome many obstacles, both technical and social.
The level of demand that the Decree nº42/2019 imposed on Building Automation and Control Systems requires significant changes, both in the projects and in the installation, not only of the BMS systems, but also in the remaining technical building systems, with a strong focus on climatisation systems, local energy production and accumulation systems, dialogue with the electricity and gas networks and shading systems.
At WiseBuilding, we are committed to this path. We have developed several renovation projects, in the support and implementation of technical control systems (some in very relevant works) that have modernised obsolete buildings, transforming them and preparing them for the future.
